Part two of Buddha in Assam. On the Theravada buddhism of the Pakhe speaking minority that emigrated to this area around 400 years ago from Dehong in Yunnan in the far south of China, Pakhe is a tai language and all through one finds on the countryside villages of thai laguage speaking or a former tai lagnguage people such as the Phake, Aiton, Khamyang, Khamti and Ahom which have retained Theravada Buddhism as their main religion amidt the overwhelming Hindu majority of the region |

Part one of series of 8 on Buddhism in North East India, one of the few regions in India where Buddhism survived the Islamic conquest and the Hindu revival movements of the last millenium. It is also one of the few regions where Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism are traditionally neighbours while at the same time also the Ambedkharite movement has followers in the wider Assam region which makes the area a micro-cosmos of Buddhism in India. |
