Chöd is a particular religious practice in Tibetan Buddhism in which the performer in his mind dissects his body and offers his meat to the spirits and all the hungry beings around. It is a practice which is traditionally performed by wandering monks and ascetics and often in places like grave yards. During the performance of Chöd one will accompany the prayer on a drum preferably made of two human skulls and a 'trumpet' made out of a human thighbone. There are several styles of Chöd and in this broadcast one will hear unique recordings of Bön Chöd with commentary by Henk Blezer. |

The Austrian Tilo Burdach is one of the main students of Koku Nischimura, the founder of the Tani-school of kyotaku players in Kyoto. The kyotaku is a specific form of the shakuhachi, generally longer and wider without lacquer on the inside which makes the instrument harder to play. Another characteristic is that the Tani school wants to continue the older meditative practice of instrument playing in which not performing but becoming one with the instrument is the main aim. Kyotaku pieces can than also be described as 'sound-breathing'. |
