The Buddhist revival in Indonesia started in the colonial period in the 1930's on a smaal scale but really took off after independence in the 1950's and 1960's. All major Buddhist schools, Theravada, Mahayana, Zen en Vajrayana can be found in the country as well the homegrown Kasogatan and Tridharma schools each appealing to different groups within the Indonesian society from the Chinese minority to followers of Javanese spiritual movements, the Shiva-Buddhist of the Javanese mountains and Bali, ethnic minorities as the Boda Sasak and nationalists and intellectuals who wanted to revive the glorious period of the old Majapahit kingdom and monumemts as the Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world. In part 1 you will hear Ananda Suyono, one of the last surviving pioneers of the 1940's and 50's. |
